These are three ways conservatives are undermining our democracy:
- The conservative majority on the Supreme Court gutted the Voting Rights Act and Republicans in Congress refused to take action and fix it.
- The GOP blocked a vote on the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act and recently voted against debating the Freedom to Vote Act.
- Map manipulators -- especially in Southern states like Texas, North Carolina, and Georgia -- are creating egregious gerrymanders by eliminating competitive districts and diluting the voices of communities of color.
And thanks to congressional Republicans and the conservative majority on the Supreme Court, this redistricting cycle is the first in more than 50 years where states with a history of discrimination do not have to get their voting maps approved by the federal government.
Our movement exists to fill the gap by holding map drawers and lawmakers accountable when they obstruct commonsense democracy and voting rights legislation.
If we take action now, we can pressure Congress to pass legislation like the Freedom to Vote Act. Provisions in the bill would go into effect immediately, like expanding voting rights and outlawing partisan gerrymandering of congressional districts.
