Dear friends,

Big things are happening in the Sunshine State!

Supported by our team at Our Children’s Trust, four of the youth plaintiffs we represented in Reynolds v. State of Florida are filing a new petition for rulemaking, asking the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (FDACS) to establish a goal to generate 100% of Florida’s electricity from renewable energy by 2050. This petition for rulemaking will be filed in January 2022 and, over the next two months, these four young people - Delaney, Isaac, Levi, and Valholly - are calling on all young Floridians under the age of 25 to sign the petition today!

Why This Action? Why Now?
The climate crisis is already having devastating impacts in Florida. And despite being the third largest emitter of greenhouse gases in the U.S., despite knowing for decades that the climate crisis harms the state’s youngest citizens, AND despite having ample evidence that transitioning their electricity to 100% renewable energy is both economically and technically feasible (and would create hundreds of thousands of new jobs!), Florida's state government still refuses to reverse course and take actions that help young Floridians rather than harm them and their futures.

Signing this petition for rulemaking is a climate action young people can take today that is both quick and easy AND powerful and impactful. Petitions for rulemaking provide a way for individuals to urge public agencies to change existing rules or regulations - or adopt new ones! - in order to more effectively serve, support, or protect the community. Unlike voting, you don’t have to be 18 to participate and, unlike a lawsuit, it doesn’t require a long-term commitment.

All it takes is a signature - lots of them! - to urge an agency to take actions that are in the best interest of their constituency. In this case, that constituency is the millions of young people in Florida who deserve a safe climate and a sustainable, renewable energy system!

How You Can Help Delaney, Isaac, Levi, and Valholly
Whether you live in Naples, Florida or Naples, Italy, you can help these four young climate leaders today by spreading the word on this new petition for rulemaking campaign:

Young Folks in Florida:
  • If you’re a young person in Florida who is under the age of 25, sign the petition today!
  • Then ask your friends, siblings, cousins, and classmates - everyone you know under the age of 25 in Florida, from the Panhandle to the Keys! - to sign on too. Use our online toolkit to create social media posts and consider emailing, calling, and texting fellow young Floridians too!
  • Lastly, be sure to ask the adults in your life to spread the word too. Share the social media toolkit with them and ask them to get the word out to their personal and professional networks. Let’s demand 100% renewable energy in Florida by 2050 right now - together!
Adults in Florida:
  • Are you a resident of the Sunshine State but you were born before 1996? Check out our social media toolkit for sample images and text that you can post to your social media today to help spread the word. Reach out to young people you know in your state who might want to join this effort - and ask your adult peers to boost the campaign too!
  • When the petition is filed in January 2022, you can send a letter or email to FDACS stating that you stand with the youth and asking that they grant the petition for rulemaking.
Allies Around the World:
  • Whether you live in another U.S. state or another country entirely, you can still help these four young people achieve their goal. Visit our social media toolkit here for images and content to post to your Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram to get the word out to folks you know in Florida.
Young people of Florida (and allies around the world): Let’s tell the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services that the time for 100% renewable energy in Florida is NOW!

In solidarity,
