For decades, major fossil fuel companies have lied to the public and bought off governments in order to continue growing their profits. The cost? All of us have to cope with worsening storms, heat waves, drought, and more while CEOs profit from this destruction.
We don't have time to wait for these corporations to decide to do the right thing. We need to take action and make oil and gas companies pay for the role they play in our current climate crisis — and that starts by enacting the Polluters Pay Climate Fund proposed by Jamaal and Sen. Chris Van Hollen.

The need for immediate and swift federal funding to combat the climate crisis is urgent, John. And it's never been fair to ask the public to continue paying for what polluters have done to our climate.
The Polluters Pay Climate Fund would raise billions of dollars from polluting corporations to fund infrastructure and begin to address the impact of the climate crisis. In New York, this fund will support efforts to build up our infrastructure to prevent destruction from climate events like Hurricane Ida.
Forty percent of the fund would go to communities disproportionately affected by climate change through investing in fortifying our massive shoreline, weatherizing mass transit, repairing out-of-date drainage systems, and addressing dangerous flood zones.
With every major climate event, our future reality becomes more clear. We need to be proactive in planning for our new climate reality, prepare for the inevitable, and work to prevent future disasters.
