I'm sure you are aware that the overwhelming majority — 99.9 percent — of climate scientists agree that climate change is occurring, and that it’s caused by human activity. But did you know that climate change deniers get 2x the coverage in the national press?

No wonder the American public gets bogged down by the claim that climate change is “controversial.”

It is essential to fight back against voices that distort the truth. Will you stand up against the well-funded industry PR machine by donating to our Green Journalism Fund?

“The structural power of business interests lends them heightened visibility in policy debates.”

Those are the words of Brown University sociologist Rachel Wetts, who studied 30 years of climate-related press. She followed the trail to see which press releases were chosen for the pages of large publications like USA Today, The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times. Turns out, the deniers saw 14 percent of their press releases cited in national news, compared to a mere 7 percent for climate activists.

And that’s not all. The research shows that press releases from scientific and technical organizations receive less media attention than PR from business interests.

If we are to turn the tide on climate change, we have to cut through the industry-sponsored PR noise machine. Earth Island Journal produces investigative journalism, commentary, and inspiring stories of grassroots movements outside of the influence of big corporations.
