Folks, before I served Colorado as senator, I served Denver’s students as school superintendent. I began to notice a pattern from one high schooler. Morning after morning, he was falling asleep in class. He was clearly exhausted and when I asked what was going on, he revealed he’d been working the midnight shift at McDonald’s so his family had enough money to get by.

I spent years fighting for the expanded Child Tax Credit because of stories like his and the fact that this is commonplace in our country. The monthly payments have helped one million Colorado kids and kept three million children out of poverty nationwide, this year alone. So in my negotiations for a further extension of the expanded Child Tax Credit, I’m thinking of the countless kids nationwide that won’t have to work the midnight shift and the parents who can help with homework because they didn’t have to pick up extra shifts because of the CTC.

I secured an additional one-year expansion of the CTC in the budget bill that we’re working to pass here in Washington. I’ve seen firsthand how income inequality affects our kids, so this fight is personal.

I’m running to meetings, making calls, and negotiating with the next generation in mind, but I haven’t had time to focus on my re-election efforts despite all that’s at stake. My team tells me that we just fell short of our mid-month fundraising goal but I know grassroots supporters like you have stepped up before. I appreciate every hard-earned dollar pitched into my campaign and hope you can donate before this month’s deadline.
