Tell Congress:
“Stand up to Big Pharma greed! Pass critical provisions in the Build Back Better Act that will allow Medicare to negotiate drug prices!”
|
John,
Allowing Medicare to negotiate drug prices has been a top priority for Democrats ever since Medicare Part D was implemented during the George W. Bush administration. But, Republican control of the White House and/or at least one chamber of Congress in nearly every year since then, plus the unequaled power of the “drug lobby,” has blocked this long held goal of actually lowering drug prices for the American people.
That’s about to change with your help. For the first time, we are on the verge of a breakthrough victory―and a defeat for Big Pharma. Included in the Build Back Better Act are several significant reforms that will save us money:
-
An annual out-of-pocket cap of $2,000 is set for seniors enrolled in Medicare Part D.
-
Medicare will be able to negotiate the price of 10 drugs, ramping up to 20 drugs a few years later (we wish it were a lot more but this is a start!).
-
A cap will be placed on the price of medications that have been on the market for at least 9 and 12 years respectively. This includes insulin (capped at $35 a month), which has seen its price soar by 1,400% over the last 25 years.
-
Drug corporations will be penalized if they raise prices higher than inflation.
While concessions were needed to bring a handful of corporate Democrats on board, this historic drug price plan would save taxpayers $250 billion―which is being used in the Build Back Better plan to invest in the American people, including by expanding Medicare to include hearing care.

Americans today pay the highest price for prescription drugs in the world―at least 2 1/2 times that of other countries and 3 1/2 times that of European countries.[1]
Thanks to you, we are on the verge of a historic win over Big Pharma and that will make investments in our communities and future―paid for by finally making the rich and corporations pay their fair share. With the U.S. House expected to vote this week, let’s keep the pressure on, demanding Congress go BIG and BOLD.
Thank you,
Frank Clemente
