In a historic 42-6 vote this afternoon, the New York City Council passed a package of animal protection measures, including a historic prohibition on the sale of foie gras.
New York City now becomes the largest city in the world to enact a ban on foie gras!
Farm Sanctuary has been a pivotal leader in fighting the cruel foie gras industry for decades, sponsoring California's landmark legislation to ban foie gras in the state, and defending the ban from several court challenges by the industry. In New York City, Farm Sanctuary members contacted their legislators, submitted testimony, and participated in the Voters for Animal Rights rally in support of the ban.
We've rescued ducks and geese who came from foie gras facilities over the years and have seen the impacts of this cruel industry firsthand. I think of birds like Monet and Matisse who arrived with sores on their bills from the feeding pipe, as well as cuts, scrapes, and broken feathers on their bodies that testified to lives spent in cramped cages.
How we treat other animals says volumes about who we are as a species, and all of us at Farm Sanctuary are deeply grateful that the New York City Council has taken a stand for compassion.
As Farm Sanctuary board member Chris Allieri said to The Gothamist this afternoon, "it's long overdue ... Young New Yorkers are watching what's happening. They are on board with a cruelty-free future."
