Hi, John. My name is Rachel, and I am the lobbyist for the Center for Freethought Equality.
I wanted to send you a personal note because of disturbing news coming out of Texas, Florida, and elsewhere in our country.
Right now, a growing number of states are considering new laws that would sanction discrimination, in the name of a warped sense of “religious freedom”.
Tucked away in bills that would allow churches to operate despite COVID-19 restrictions, these measures would restrict the fundamental rights of LGBTQ+ people and women to access healthcare, adopt children, or even keep a job.
We’re fighting back, but this growing menace requires that we double down on our work to strengthen the separation of church and state and elect leaders who will champion humanist and atheist values.
Tonight is our deadline for 100 new donors to step up and help us counter this flood of new discriminatory laws, but we’re still short. Please donate now and we’ll immediately put your gift to use to help us elect humanist champions and build a safer and saner government. [[link removed]]

While many states already have draconian laws restricting our rights, right-wing zealots are using the pandemic to pass laws that would reshape our government and society further to match their narrow, bigoted, and homophobic worldview. Their warped sense of “religious freedom” includes the “freedom” of:
- Employers to fire someone who is transitioning genders, or fire a woman who became pregnant outside of marriage;
- Schools to deny trans students from playing sports;
- Businesses to close their doors to same-sex couples;
- Pharmacies to turn away women seeking to fill birth control prescriptions;
We believe freedom of religion must include freedom from religion, and the religious beliefs of a few must never infringe on the fundamental rights of all people.
If you believe in the same, we need your help. Please donate now and help us protect our country and the people who live here from religious overreach. [[link removed]]
Thanks for your support, it makes a difference.
