John,
The days are getting shorter, but CREW’s work is picking up. From accountability at the USPS to continuing our investigation into January 6th to a huge Hatch Act win, we’ve been fighting to hold bad actors accountable and for a more ethical government. Here are just a few of the things we’ve been working on:
- Following multiple CREW complaints, the Office of Special Counsel released a report finding that 13 senior members of the Trump administration, including Jared Kushner, Stephen Miller, Mark Meadows, Kellyanne Conway and Kayleigh McEnany violated the Hatch Act in the weeks leading up to the 2020 election. This is an important step towards accountability and confirms our beliefs about that administration’s systematic misuse of government to retain power, but the work’s not done yet—Congress must pass the Protecting Our Democracy Act to strengthen Hatch Act enforcement. Read our statement here.
-
Ron Bloom, chair of the USPS Board of Governors, is up for reappointment and must be replaced. Bloom has supported Louis DeJoy even as DeJoy has attacked mail service, jeopardized voting by mail and come under federal investigation. Bloom may also have his own conflicts of interest—DeJoy bought $305,000 in bonds from Bloom’s investment firm. The Board of Governors must fire DeJoy, and Bloom is standing in the way of that happening—he must go. Read more about our investigation into possible conflicts of interest on the USPS Board of Governors and sign our petition calling on Biden to replace Bloom.
-
Justice Department officials in the Trump administration considered briefing Congress on January 5 about expected “unrest” in Washington, but ultimately chose not to, which CREW uncovered in documents obtained via a Freedom of Information Act request. We have a lot of questions about why that briefing never happened, given what we know about the severity of the threats law enforcement was monitoring. Read more in our report here.
-
After reports that hundreds of federal judges broke the law by hearing cases in which they held stock of one of the litigants, CREW submitted testimony to Congress, calling for Congress to prohibit judges from owning individual stocks and apply the federal criminal conflict of interest statute to the judiciary. This is a simple fix for a widespread problem, and Congress shouldn’t wait to act to help restore public trust in the judiciary. Read more here.

We continued to fight to shed light on dark money. Our investigation into dark money that boosted former Senator Kelly Loeffler’s campaign in 2020 found that millions of dollars in funding came from just 2 donors, who are still anonymous. Read our investigation here.
As always, none of this important work could happen without your support. Thank you for standing with us,
The CREW Team
