DC's Fair Elections program works. Check out this op-ed in the Washington Post declaring Fair Elections a success and changing politics as usual.
But you already know this, friend. As someone who supported my past campaigns, you know I've always put earning the support of my Ward 6 neighbors first.
In 2014, I became the first candidate in DC to win an election after refusing to accept any contributions from anonymous corporations and shadowy PACs. We made an intentional choice to run a campaign that focused on neighbors and individuals, rather than spending time dialing for dollars and relying on special interest money.
We did it again in 2018, and as your Councilmember, you know I'm unbought and unbossed - a strong independent voice that has proven how to get things done and deliver for our communities.
Whether this is your first time checking out my campaign or if you've been a past supporter, I'm asking if you can take that step and chip in for our re-election in Ward 6 right now. Could you take 2 minutes and contribute today?
And part of creating that change was to lead Fair Elections through the Council and into law. It's had an immediate impact - credited with helping ensure more diverse candidates are on the ballot and more community voices are at the table to make decisions. Changing the way elections are run wasn't easy, but it was a fight I knew was worth having. And now we're seeing the results.
Throughout my career, I've been a champion for good government reforms. And in case you hadn't seen, I just introduced another bill to expand the ease and accessibility of voting in DC - making permanent the popular ballot drop boxes, mailing ballots to every voter, and ensuring you can cast your ballot at the precinct that's most convenient for you. Around the country, we've seen state legislatures take action to restrict voting and keep people from the ballot box. Here in DC, we take a different approach and I'm proud to fight to protect and expand our local democracy - putting more power into the hands of DC voters.
That's why the Fair Elections program is so important. Candidates spend their time where they need to - with their residents and working on the issues they care most about. With public financing matching your contribution 5-to-1, you hold the power and candidates have to come to you - not big donors. It's making a difference and in just two election cycles, it's changed the way campaigns are run.
And that's why I need your help today. Please continue the support you've shown to me and our work in Ward 6 by making a contribution to the re-election campaign. We're off to a great start and need to make sure we bring it home strong.
Thanks again and I hope to see you soon!
