Friends,
People do not realize that the Bipartisan Infrastructure Bill (BIF), which passed early this month, was negotiated by moderate-leaning senators of both parties.
In other words, “bipartisan” means that it is a watered down version — not inline with the bold agenda that the progressive movement is hoping to achieve.
That’s why progressive lawmakers agreed that they would only vote to pass BIF if it was included as part of a farther-reaching, more ambitious bill — the Build Back Better Act (BBB).
BBB is paid for with a minimum tax on all corporations and increased taxes on ultra-wealthy Americans. It includes efforts that directly benefit working-class families like lowering of drug costs, universal preschool, four weeks of paid and family medical leave, over $550 billion in climate action, and more.
The Squad knows how impactful the BBB is to lifting up the poor, working poor, and barely middle class. They stood true to their word and voted against BIF when it was passed without BBB. They held the line against mediocrity. They understood that we have the capacity to give our best. The American people deserve no less.
But now that BIF has successfully passed by itself, progressives are relying on the word of five moderate Democrats who pledged in a letter that they would commit to voting for Build Back Better no later than this week, the week of November 15.
Now is a time to take urgent action together and hold the line with The Squad and other like-minded individuals. We need 6,000 signatures on our petition in the next 48 hours to show Congress the strong public demand to pass Build Back Better immediately.
