Rittenhouse’s trial. It does not include graphic descriptions of gun
violence.
Hey Indivisibles,
This week is one of those times where several very important, difficult
things are happening at the same time. Here’s what we’re thinking about:
1. Today we watched the closing arguments in Kyle Rittenhouse’s trial for
murdering Black Lives Matter protestors last August. We expect a
verdict this week, and while we don’t yet know the outcome, the way
this trial has proceeded is just another blatant demonstration of how
our judicial system has and continues to uphold white supremacy. It’s
clear to us that if there were a person of color in Rittenhouse’s
place, we’d be witnessing a very different process.
While right wing extremists rally to defend Rittenhouse, their allies
in state legislators have passed laws protecting drivers who hit and
kill protestors, and in the same sessions, passed legislation
restricting voting rights and instituting voter ID laws that are
proven to disproportionately impact Black and PoC Americans. In the
to-dos below, we’ll offer some suggestions as to how you can take
action on racial justice and policing, as well as how to move forward
pro-democracy legislation.
2. Simultaneously (and we know this can be hard to hold at the same
moment, it's hard for us too) this is the week that we hold
conservative Democrats to their word on passing Biden’s full agenda.
As you'll remember, House conservatives Democrats committed to vote
for the Build Back Better Agenda (BBB) after getting fiscal info from
the CBO (Congressional Budget Office this week. For more on how this
went down, you can [ [link removed] ]read this message from our Co-Executive Director
Leah Greenberg. BBB is how we’ll win much needed public investments
across the economy, designed to support children and families,
historic investments in climate action, make healthcare more
affordable, and provide deportation protection and work permits for
many immigrants, all while taking steps to make our tax code more fair
for working families. Below, we’ll give you directions on who to call
to ensure it passes.
With that, here are your weekly to-dos:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Your Weekly To-Dos
1. [ [link removed] ]Call your representative and make sure they pass the full Build
Back Better Agenda. You can use this link or text SaveBBB to 97779 to
be connected directly. This is the week that we hold conservative
Democrats to their word on passing Biden’s full agenda. This means
we’re in a key moment for advocacy as we fight to win the most
progressive reconciliation bill possible. It is urgent that you call
your representative and tell them how important it is that they stick
to their word and pass an inclusive recovery bill that works for
everyone. [ [link removed] ]Once you have called your representative click here to
call your senators and demand they pass the bill immediately after the
House sends it over. If you’re in a red state, this is a time it’s
still important to call your Member of Congress -- while you likely
won’t be able to sway their vote, it’s important they know that you
are watching, and won’t let them take credit for the investments that
this bill provides after the fact.
2. [ [link removed] ]Call your Senator and demand they move quickly on the Freedom to
Vote Act. Republican senators are redrawing congressional districts
(particularly in communities of color), and trying to suppress
marginalized votes across America. This is unacceptable and we must
preserve and protect our democracy against ongoing attempts to erode
it. Call your Senators and let them know you want them to adjust the
filibuster now to pass the Freedom to Vote Act.
3. [ [link removed] ]Support Organizations Helping #BlackLivesMatter. In light of the
blatant racism coming from the Rittenhouse Trial, take a stand against
white supremacy by donating to one of the many organizations helping
#BlackLivesMatter. We will not let hate win!
