Monday Nature Mystery

We are pleased to announce the winner of our Monday Nature Mystery, Cathy JettPlease email us your snail mail address and preference for a hat or tote bag to: [email protected]

Congratulations to Cathy for correctly identifying Elderberry (Sambucus nigra). Cathy was also kind enough to share the following information from WebMD. Elderberry is native to Europe and North America. The berries are used to make medicine. Some people take elderberry by mouth for the common cold, flu (influenza), and many other conditions, but there is no good scientific evidence to support these uses or to fight COVID-19. On the other hand, cooked elderberries are used for making wine and tea, and also pies, jellies, and jams.

They are also an important food source for birds migrating in the fall! Want to learn more about native plants that support birds? Visit our Audubon at Home program!
