Our grassroots momentum just scared Republican Madison Cawthorn out of running for re-election in his home district.

That’s right -- Cawthorn announced that he’s abandoning his constituents and switching districts to run in NC-13 because the new district lines make NC-14 more favorable for Democrats. He even lamented in an email to his supporters that donations were “flooding in” to his Democratic opponent.

While we’re happy to say goodbye to Cawthorn’s representation in this part of Western North Carolina, our fight is far from over. As one of the loudest right-wing insurrectionists in Congress, Cawthorn has caused serious damage that will take time to heal. And it is likely he will handpick a candidate to back in this race, trying to expand his brand of politics.

Jasmine’s message since the very beginning of this campaign has been to restore love, hope, and empathy in WNC. She’s continued to fight back against Cawthorn’s divisiveness, promotion of violence, and fear-mongering -- and just because he’s leaving doesn’t mean his influence and tactics will.

Let us be clear when we say that Madison Cawthorn remains a large threat and we can’t allow him to carry on his extremism across our state.

Although Cawthorn isn’t our opponent anymore, we’re still running to replace him, his ideologies, and his lack of leadership for the people of WNC. And even though redistricting has made our district bluer, giving us a stronger opportunity to win, our race will still be highly competitive.
