Dear John:

Transgender Awareness Week (Nov 13-19) continues, so be sure to check out our Education section below for great ways to show up as an ally to your trans and nonbinary friends and loved ones. We hope you'll consider participating in a TDOR vigil, whether in person or virtually--see the Support section below for more information.

We're also proud to share that a wonderful film, LITTLE GIRL, is coming to VOD on November 16th. LITTLE GIRL is the moving portrait of 7-year-old Sasha, who has always known that she is a girl. Sasha’s family has recently accepted her gender identity, embracing their daughter for who she truly is while working to confront outdated norms and find affirmation in a small community of rural France. Realized with delicacy and intimacy, Sébastien Lifshitz's documentary poetically explores the emotional challenges, everyday feats, and small moments in Sasha’s life. Watch the trailer, and learn more at musicboxfilms.com/film/little-girl/.

Honoring Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR)

Each November 20th, PFLAG joins in honoring the Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR), which was inspired by the 1998 murder of Rita Hester

Sadly, 2021 has already seen at least 45 transgender or gender non-conforming people die by violent means including, most recently, a beloved member of the PFLAG Tampa family. We say "at least," because often these stories go unreported or misreported. As in previous years, the majority of lives taken were those of Black and Latina transgender women. We would be remiss not to also mention the many trans and gender-nonconforming people we have lost to complications from COVID-19. See the list to date courtesy of our friends at HRC.

This year, for TDOR 2021 we encourage you to participate in TDOR vigils, whether virtual or in person. For in-person events, please participate in a way that is safe based on your community's COVID guidelines. Many of our PFLAG chapters will host virtual TDOR events via their PFLAG Connects meetings. Find the chapter nearest you and ask how they are honoring the day.

  2. Watch: Rewatch our Supporting Trans and Nonbinary Loved Ones: What Would You Do? PFLAG Academy Online to keep your allyship skills sharp and focused. Want to learn more about Nonbinary identities? Be sure to also take a look at What The +?: Understanding and Supporting Expansive LGBTQ+ Identities.

Tell your Legislators: Let's Build Back Better

PFLAG National supports the Build Back Better Act, which will help all families thrive. The bill would expand pre-K for all 3- and 4-year old children; expand childcare subsidies, ensuring families pay no more than 7% of their income in childcare costs; and expand the ACA to include health insurance to people in states without expanded Medicaid, covering low-income people, seniors, and people with disabilities, including LGBTQ+ people, who might not otherwise be covered. Build Back Better is expected to come up for a vote in the House this week!

Contact your Representative and two Senators--don’t forget to give them your address and tell them PFLAG sent you--and ask them to vote in favor of this important bill.

Something to Talk About...Live!
