What you need to know about the Counselors Not Criminalization in Schools Act.

Dear John,
It’s been a while since I’ve reached out to you. I met the founders of March For Our Lives in the days after the tragic shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School and have been honored to work with them ever since. Now, we’re working closely on an important initiative that I wanted to make sure you’re aware of, John.
Representative Ayanna Pressley and I have reintroduced legislation called the Counseling Not Criminalization in Schools Act, which is an important effort to reform how we deal with discipline in schools. Every student deserves to be able to learn safely and with dignity, but over the past decade it has become increasingly clear that the over-policing of our schools has not made kids any safer. Often, police end up arresting students for simple misbehaviors that should be dealt with in school, not in the criminal justice system. To make matters worse, there have been over 150 assaults of students of color by school police. [[link removed]]
The Counseling Not Criminalization in Schools Act would end federal funding for police in schools, and instead put this money toward helping schools hire counselors, social workers, mental health practitioners, and other support personnel to create a safer learning environment across the board—rather than criminalizing students who are predominantly Black, Native, and Latinx, as well as students with disabilities.
The positive effects will be seen well beyond grade schools. By getting at the roots of the school-to-prison pipeline and the upstream causes of economic and education inequities, and instead looking to restorative justice programs and evidence-based, trauma-informed services, together, we can ensure a safer, more inclusive learning environment.
With that said, I’m calling on you to make your voice heard. Tell your representatives why this legislation matters.

March For Our Lives and the students leading it are a force for positive change. They give me hope for the future of our country. I hope you will continue supporting them. Every single person who is engaging in the life-saving work of gun violence prevention advocacy -- whether you’re an active chapter member, you’ve donated any amount to fuel this movement, or you just enjoy reading these weekly emails -- is critical in the campaign to change our gun laws, and prove that the people are more powerful than the gun lobby.
Members of March For Our Lives will be participating in a Lobby Day on Wednesday, November 17 where they will be delivering your message of support to Members of Congress. I urge you to submit a message of support. Your voice is powerful in this critical debate.
Every best wish,
Senator Chris Murphy
