Dear Friend,

When I first announced my candidacy for the United States Senate, I chose to do
so in the Vermont State House right across the street from where I grew up in
Montpelier. It was an improbable race for a 34-year-old prosecutor from a state
that had never elected a Democrat to the United States Senate.

Today, Marcelle and I returned to that same room to announce I will not seek
reelection next year. I am humbled by the faith my fellow Vermonters have placed
in me and gratified by the work I have done on their behalf.

From conserving lands and cleaning up our waterways to creating the national
organic standards and farm to school lunch programs, I have always sought to
bring Vermont's voice to the Senate.

I fulfilled my obligation to preserve and protect the Constitution. I have been
a staunch defender of civil liberties, the First Amendment, and the free flow of
information from the government to its citizens.

I brought Vermont values to the fight to ban landmines, which led to the Leahy
War Victims Fund to aid those harmed by these indiscriminate killers; to the
Leahy Law that bans aid to foreign governments that engage in human rights
abuses; and to diplomatic efforts in Vietnam and Cuba.

I have been blessed to share this journey with my children and grandchildren and
the love of my life, Marcelle. And I have been blessed to have supporters like
you to help me along the way. I am forever grateful for your support.

I look forward to the work ahead, starting today with the signing of the
infrastructure bill by President Biden. We will pass the Build Back Better Act
and appropriations bills. And until my final day in office, I will continue to
work with President Biden and any willing Republicans to help our nation grow
stronger in the aftermath of this pandemic.

I will also continue to work tirelessly in support of Democratic candidates. To that end, you can help me by making a contribution here to support Democratic candidates in 2022. [link removed]

Marcelle and I send you our love and gratitude.

Sincerely,

Patrick Leahy
