John, we cannot afford to look away now.
The situation in Ethiopia is rapidly deteriorating. My team is extremely concerned about the continued tensions and hostilities in northern Ethiopia where many refugees, displaced people and local communities are reeling from a year of multiple humanitarian disasters.
Millions of Ethiopians are struggling to meet their basic needs — and the situation is expected to get worse. Right now, I'm afraid to report, a devastating drought is exacerbating hunger needs for millions of people.
I traveled to Ethiopia a few months ago. One woman told me how she had to eat leaves to survive as she hid from the violence in the forest for a month. Her story is unfortunately not unique.
"We at least have enough water to wash and drink," another man shared with me — speaking about the IRC's water provision program.
The stories I heard were harrowing, but I was thankful to hear the IRC is able to provide some relief amidst so much pain.

The IRC has been serving displaced families in the Tigray region of Ethiopia since 2001. We support more than 25,000 refugees in two camps in the area — providing clean water, primary health care, education and more. We also work in other parts of Ethiopia, providing much needed support for refugees and displaced people.
Displaced families are counting on us to deliver critical aid and ensure basic needs are being met. The IRC is prepared to stay as long as we are needed to ensure that families have what they need to survive, recover and rebuild their lives.
With your help, we can meet this moment of great need and ensure that families in crisis know they are not alone. Thank you for your ongoing support.

P.S. I'll try to attach some of my photos from my trip to Ethiopia here at the bottom of this email. People were living in overcrowded and unsanitary spaces in schools and empty buildings. (I don't have any photos of the people I met because showing people's faces might put them at risk.)
Again, we are deeply grateful for the support of our incredible community during this urgent moment of need. Don't forget, you can use this personalized link to rush your emergency donation now: https://help.rescue.org/donate/ethiopia-1x |
