Authorities in the U.K. pulled cookies from the market because they were made with artificial color Red 3 - which is BANNED from most foods in Europe but considered completely legal in the U.S.

The FDA banned Red 3 from cosmetics in 1990 after animal studies showed that it caused cancer. Yet, for some reason they still permit Red 3 in our food and you’ll find it in chewing gum, popsicles, ice creams, packaged fruit, and candy.

It’s outrageous that food companies would add this to products made for children - like Kellogg's Unicorn Waffles.

You’ve got to ask yourself…
Why does the U.S. FDA allow chemicals in our food that are banned or heavily restricted in other countries?

There are many more examples:

M&Ms, Skittles, and Haribo candies are all made without artificial dyes in other countries (with the exception of Blue 1). You’ll hardly find artificial dyes in food in Europe and the U.K. because they are much more heavily regulated there and require a warning label that says “May Have an Adverse Effect on Activity and Attention in Children”.

I ate my fair share of Cheetos growing up and remember licking my cheesy orange Cheeto fingers. Little did I know then what was really turning my fingers orange. Yellow 6 is a controversial artificial color made from petroleum. It’s cheap for food companies to use, but may be putting our health at risk. Cheetos makes another version of their product called “Simply Cheetos” that is made with organic corn meal and no artificial colors. They also make Cheetos in other countries, like Poland, without any artificial colors. They use Paprika Extract instead of Yellow 6.

Why do Americans need fluorescent orange Cheetos made with risky yellow dye that may be contaminated with carcinogens?
Why does Pepsico think it’s okay to continue using Yellow 6 in America, while they make Cheetos with natural colors in other countries?

When are companies going to be held accountable for using controversial and potentially cancerous chemicals in their products? Especially products for children.

These are questions we all should be asking.

We must challenge the U.S. food industry to discontinue the use of controversial ingredients that are not allowed elsewhere in the world. We deserve to have the same quality food without potential toxins.
