When it comes to understanding just how harmful gerrymandering is to our democracy, it helps to take a look at the data. States like Texas and Georgia have released manipulated maps that would result in Democrats winning far fewer seats in Congress than their share of the congressional vote in 2020.
And in the most egregious case in North Carolina, the GOP’s new maps could give Republicans over 70% of the state’s seats -- despite the fact that a majority of voters in 2020 actually chose Democrats to represent them in the U.S. House!
Suffice it to say that if maps can be manipulated so badly that they actually produce the opposite result of what the voters intended, our democracy is in pretty bad shape. That’s why the NDRC is working around the clock to end gerrymandering and make sure the next decade of maps actually represent our communities. But we need your help to do it!
New maps are being passed into law nearly every day now. And while we have staff on the ground in several key states who are working to shine a light on the process and hold map manipulators accountable, their work depends on financial support from people like you.
