Friend, The SPLC’s Learning for Justice (LFJ) program has a new professional learning opportunity for educators: Teaching Hard History Professional Learning Cohorts. The inaugural cohorts enable educators to learn together with their peers and LFJ to build the knowledge and skills to lead our collective endeavor of teaching young people honest history. We’re hoping educators in the South will join our cohorts, so we’re giving preference to applications from educators in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana and Mississippi. The cohorts will engage with LFJ’s Teaching Hard History: American Slavery framework and learn how to use it to enrich their lessons on American enslavement, build students’ civic engagement and critical thinking and deepen their mindsets around inclusion and empathy. THH Cohorts will provide educators, free of charge, the chance to deeply engage with Teaching Hard History resources, collaborate with LFJ staff and other cohort members across the country and gain insights and feedback on implementation. There will be two cohorts: an elementary (K-5) cohort and a secondary (6-12) cohort. After three months of learning in community, each educator will have an opportunity to showcase their work virtually to a national audience. The deadline to apply is Dec. 3. The cohort sessions are set to begin in January. Educators can explore the syllabus, check out the FAQs and submit their applications here. Sincerely, Your friends at the Southern Poverty Law Center
