COP26 is over. And once again world leaders, especially from richer, polluting nations, have failed to do enough to tackle the climate crisis and show real support for developing countries. [1]

The only reason we got what little progress we did is because young people, Indigenous leaders, activists and countries on the climate frontline forced concessions that were grudgingly given. Without them, and without people like you standing with them, these climate talks would have flopped completely.

You might be feeling angry, disappointed or tired - maybe a mix of all three. I definitely do. But despite the last-minute wrangling, a signal has been sent that the era of coal is ending.

Boris Johnson spent his time at COP talking up his climate credentials. But the reality is that the deal his government oversaw in Glasgow is not good enough. He wants to position himself as a climate leader, but when the COP spotlight fades, his government wants to quietly approve two new major fossil fuel projects here in the UK. [2]

Can you show Boris Johnson the spotlight is only getting brighter and he needs to stop all new fossil fuel projects now, starting with the Cambo oil field and the Cumbria coal mine? Affected communities, campaigners from the Global South and scientists have said it loud and clear - we need to be transitioning away from fossil fuels right now. But many of the richer nations, like the UK, failed to take proper action. They are hiding behind ineffective commitments and empty rhetoric.

Boris Johnson loves telling us he really cares about the climate. But after his COP duties, he went back to business as usual; taking a private jet to meet with a climate sceptic, and refusing to join a new alliance of countries focused on phasing out fossil fuels. [3]

It was only last week Boris Johnson was talking about being ‘a minute to midnight’ away from disaster. [4] But out of the COP spotlight, it looks like his climate ambitions could be gone in sixty seconds.

While the UK mainly talks about climate leadership, Costa Rica, Denmark and other nations are actually starting to take meaningful action. They’ve created the Beyond Oil and Gas Alliance - a coalition that commits to set an end date for oil and gas exploration and production in alignment with the Paris Agreement. [5] The age of fossil fuels is ending - our government needs to get with the programme.

If Boris Johnson really wants to be a climate leader he must stop the Cambo oil field and Cumbria coal mine, and focus on a just transition for fossil fuel workers and properly supporting renewable energy. Can you put a meeting directly into his actual calendar and remind him exactly what it takes to be a climate leader?

Boris Johnson’s bold statements on the climate in the run up to COP have exposed his hypocrisy - and it’s left him vulnerable. From questions in parliament to tough media interviews, he knows any climate credibility he has is slipping. 

We need to make sure, as COP ends, he has one clear priority on his to-do list: cancel all new fossil fuel projects in the UK, and be a part of the solution to keep temperatures down.
