It’s me. I mean, it’s you, but from the year 2029. Anyway, I’m writing (we’re writing?) this letter back in time in hopes that it will serve as a warning about the imminent danger that gerrymandering and voter suppression pose to our democracy -- and that you’ll avoid making the same mistakes we made.

You see, back in the year 2021, when the GOP was racing to pass as many highly manipulated maps as possible during the redistricting process -- coupled with a coordinated push to restrict voting rights -- we didn’t take the threat seriously. We basically allowed them to do whatever they wanted, and the result is that they’ve been in power ever since.

In 2021, the NDRC urgently needs your support to keep up the fight for fair maps and ensure our democracy holds.

More from my dystopian future: With the maps gerrymandered so badly in so many states across the country, it didn’t matter that voters overwhelmingly chose Democrats in U.S. House and state legislative elections in 2022, 2024, 2026, or 2028. We ended up with Republican majorities anyway, thanks to the gerrymandering that happened all the way back in the year 2021.

Those Republican majorities have restricted abortion rights and LGBTQ rights, totally abdicated our nation’s responsibility to fight climate change, and have refused to address gun violence while they benefit from millions in campaign donations from polluters and gun manufacturers.

And worst of all, they’ve continued restricting access to the ballot, so our prospects for changing things in future elections are looking grimmer and grimmer by the day. That’s why it’s crucial that right now, in the year 2021, you do everything you can to fight back against manipulated maps and voter suppression before it’s too late.

The NDRC is working furiously in 2021 to protect voting rights and ensure the redistricting process results in fair maps across the country. But they need your grassroots support to get the job done, which is why I’m writing to ask you to support them today.
