A year might sound like a long time, but I can promise you that it’s not. We still have to stand out in a crowded primary and win the general election in a state that’s elected Republican governors in three out of the last five elections.

So, Jessica, Haley, and I have been hard at work refining our campaign strategy, and we finally shared our plans with the team. As one of my biggest supporters and a critical part of Team Tom, I wanted to make sure you received an exclusive, first look at our strategy memo, team.

Maryland is a purple state, and it shouldn’t be. It is a state with deep progressive values and a history of electing leaders who stand by those values and make them a reality. This is why the Maryland gubernatorial primary is critical. The ONLY way we put Maryland in the solid “blue” column is by electing a leader who can win in November. That leader is Tom Perez.

Tom has a proven track record of getting things done. He knows how to win elections, and he has shored up early support from labor groups and civil rights leaders in the state. Now, we need to keep the momentum going.

Here’s how we’ll do it:

• Expanded Digital Ads: To stay competitive, reaching key audiences with digital ads early and often will be key in our path to victory.

• Increased Outreach to Diverse Communities: If elected, Tom will be the first Latino Governor in Maryland’s history. It’s important to Tom that everyone across Maryland feels heard and included. Authentic engagement with diverse communities is central to our values and a key component of our campaign strategy.

• Unmatched Ground Game: Tom understands that an unmatched ground game is crucial to securing victory. We’ll develop a robust field program to talk to, and turn out, voters from across the state.

• An Army of Grassroots Support: Small-dollar donations are invaluable to sustaining our momentum and implementing each part of our campaign plan. In order to win, we must redouble our efforts to recruit grassroots support from across the country.

Maryland families are facing real problems, team. Families and small businesses are struggling to get by in the wake of a global pandemic while the rich get richer. Racial biases and inequities from housing to criminal justice continue to hold back thousands of Marylanders. And so many students -- particularly low-income students and students of color -- are being left behind without access to the world-class education they deserve.

In less than a year, we have an opportunity to elect Tom and put the government to work to solve the toughest issues facing Maryland families. And we need your help to do it.
