Weekend Reading
Dear John,
Last month, we asked the AFSC community to help residents of New Orleans make a full recovery from Hurricane Ida. Thank you to everyone who donated to our efforts!
Supporters like you have helped community members organize cleanups, food distribution, and more. Read the latest update from AFSC’s Dee Dee Green. [link removed]
Here are this week’s picks to inform and support your activism.
AFSC helps investors divest for immigrant justice: Our Investigate project has produced the first-ever divestment list for immigrant justice. We’ve also identified over 60 companies that profit from border militarization and surveillance and criminalization of immigrants. “It is time for us to divest from these harmful business activities and invest in our communities instead," says AFSC's Dov Baum. Tell Congress: Pass a robust reconciliation package: Thanks to everyone who contacted elected officials last week to pass the Build Back Better bill! With the vote delayed, we must keep up our pressure on Congress. Urge them to pass the bill without taking out essential programs or letting procedure get in the way of a pathway to citizenship. After four years in sanctuary, Ingrid Encalada Latorre is granted a stay of removal: This week, the immigrant leader and mother of three left church sanctuary in Colorado. Now she can live outside the church walls without fear of being detained. “Ingrid has taught us that you don’t give up,” says AFSC’s Gabriela Flora. “You fight for what is right and what is just, that it is love that can overcome injustice.” (Longmont Times-Call) [link removed]
Tell President Biden to reopen the border to asylum seekers: The U.S. fully reopened to many international travelers this week, allowing some families and friends to reunite. But under “Title 42,” the Biden administration is still deporting asylum seekers at the U.S.-Mexico border. It’s also working to restart the harmful "Remain in Mexico" policy. Now thousands of migrants remain in camps in Mexico, where they face violence and dangerous conditions. Please join us in urging President Biden to reverse these policies. [link removed]
Watch the premiere of "Caging Childhood: Palestinian Children in Israel's Military Detention System” (Nov. 20, 1 p.m. ET/ 10 a.m. PT): The short documentary tells the stories of three Palestinian children in the occupied West Bank. They share their experience of being detained, prosecuted, and imprisoned by the Israeli military. The film was produced by Defense for Children International-Palestine, AFSC's partner in the No Way to Treat a Child campaign. Register for the virtual screening and discussion with advocates in Palestine and the U.S.
