Where Europe stands on gay marriage and civil unions

Northern Ireland has become the latest European jurisdiction to allow gays and lesbians to marry following action by the UK Parliament in London. British lawmakers justified the change (which was accompanied by the legalization of abortion) because has been suspended since January 2017 amid a stalemate between Northern Ireland’s parties. Same-sex marriage had already been legal in the rest of the UK for several years. An updated Fact Tank post looks at the legality of same-sex marriage across Europe.
