Friends -
The United Nations climate change conference in Glasgow comes to an end today. It is a huge moment for the future of our planet.
Climate change is not a future crisis — it is a present crisis. And our window to reverse the pace of climate change is shrinking extremely fast.
This is not an issue the United States can solve on our own. It is going to require collective action globally, but in order to convince other nations to act, America needs to lead. That’s why we need to pass the Build Back Better Act as soon as possible.
The bipartisan infrastructure deal that just passed has some great steps toward action on climate change, but the bulk of the action we really need to be taking is in the Build Back Better Act. So I need you to help us keep the pressure on Congress:
ADD YOUR NAMEThe Build Back Better Act is our best chance, and perhaps last chance, to save the climate.
It will show the world that the United States is finally willing to enact big serious policy change, which I think will inspire other countries like China and India to make changes themselves.
We still release some of the highest levels of emissions on a per capita basis. Despite only representing about 5% of the global population, the United States accounts for 20-25% of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions.
It is just impossible for us to get other countries like India or China to cut their emissions if we do not lead with action ourselves. They look at us asking them to make significant expenditures to convert from a coal-based economy to a renewable-based economy and they say, “Why should we act when the United States has not been willing to enact a clean energy future?”
The Build Back Better Act is extraordinary and historic. Taxing billionaires and millionaires so that people can afford child care and health care and rent, while saving the climate too. We need to get it done.
So here’s where things stand: We’re in the final stretch of the Build Back Better negotiations. So we need maximum pressure on my colleagues not just to pass this bill but also to make sure strong climate provisions are included.
Don’t let the headlines or the day-to-day up and down drama of legislating impact your advocacy. When it comes to enacting climate legislation, failure is not an option. Keep fighting. Now is not the time to sit on the sidelines.
Every best wish,
Chris Murphy
