In 2017, Danica Roem became the first openly trans person seated in a state legislature. And since then, she and Dawn Adams have been instrumental in defending and passing laws to help our community. Thanks to leaders like Danica and Dawn, the Virginia legislature beat back bills attacking LGBTQ rights and expanded Medicaid to over 300,000 Virginians.
Danica and Dawn's opponents have made it clear they would reverse this progress and do a lot more damage. Danica's opponent, Kelly McGinn has vocally advocated against the Equal Rights Amendment and called LGBTQ adoption “a social experiment on our children.” She tried to block marriage equality, even comparing it to slavery, and actively opposes adding sexual orientation and gender identity as protected classes. If Danica loses, Kelly McGinn will take her place and bigots everywhere will know that a message like McGinn's resonates with voters. We can't let that happen, John. Texas House District 28 has been represented by a long line of anti-equality candidates - but Eliz Markowitz is going to change that in 2019. When she wins her special election, it will have huge reverberations: it'll show bigots that their "safe" districts aren't so safe when the rest of the state House races take place in 2020. That's why they're working so hard to stop Eliz's historic candidacy. Texans will be better off when Eliz is in office - and her election could pave the way for another big LGBTQ win in 2020. In 2018, Gina Ortiz Jones lost her race for U.S. Congress by just 1,150 votes and her previous opponent has dropped out of the race.
