[link removed] [[link removed]]Today we honor the men and women who have served in our armed forces. Happy Veteran’s Day!
The citizens of Maryland’s First District have a long and proud legacy of answering their nation’s call. Like most of you, I can proudly recite the recent history of veterans in my family. One of my great uncles stormed the Normandy beaches during World War II. Another was a pilot in the Pacific. My father-in-law served in WWII and in Korea, and my brother-in-law served with the Marines in Kuwait, Iraq, and Afghanistan. My son is currently with the Air Force in the Middle East. I am proud of their service and grateful for their sacrifices.
People who have served will often say they didn’t care what color the person next to them was, or what religion, or what political party. They just wanted to know that they had each other’s backs. They depended on each other, looked after each other and, when necessary, were willing to fight for each other. They were all in it together.
That’s one of many great lessons we can learn from our military veterans. Duty. Honor. Service. Sacrifice. Unity.
To those of you who have served, my family and I thank you. The United States is stronger and more secure as a nation because of you. Thank you for all you have done and all you do. And thank you for reminding us of what your service taught you: That in confronting our most difficult challenges, our continued freedom as the United States truly depends on our commitment to staying united.
