As part of spreading awareness about our broken court system, I wanted to speak to you today about expanding the Supreme Court.
Our current Supreme Court has lost the trust of the American people. Republicans have shattered judicial norms by refusing to take up the nomination of Merrick Garland, and ramming through right wing extremists served up by the Federalist Society.
There is now a conservative supermajority on the Supreme Court, including two justices who were credibly accused of sexual misconduct towards women. It’s the same Court that effectively banned abortion in Texas, gutted the Voting Rights Act, and opened the door to unlimited dark money in politics with its decision in Citizens United.
Rep. Hank Johnson is leading the effort for reform. He has introduced legislation to expand the number of seats on the court from nine to thirteen. That would ensure one justice for each circuit court of appeals, which is how the number of justices were originally determined.
Polling shows public approval of the Supreme Court is historically low, but expanding the number of justices can bring balance along with confidence back to the high court.
Thank you,
