John,
Today, we honor all those who have served our country in the military, among them my dad, Ron Gerry, who served as a combat engineer in Germany with the Army in the late Sixties.
My dad's commitment to our nation and our local community has always inspired me to public service. He's a personal hero of mine. Here in Suffolk County, we have tens of thousands of heroic veterans.
While words of thanks are important, our veterans need action. As a nation, we have a responsibility to honor our veterans every day by fulfilling the promise that their sacrifices will be matched with the support they need when they return home and as they grow old.
From providing easy access to quality health care (including mental health care) to post-service job training and placement programs -- we should be doing more to support our veterans.
There are over 7,000 U.S-based nonprofits helping veterans and military families, addressing challenges like transitioning back to society, homelessness, health issues, and more. But with more than 18 million veterans in our country, we need our federal government to do more.
That's why this Veterans Day, I'm not just reaching out to thank our heroes in the armed services, but using my platform to bring awareness to the issues they're facing right now, John. If we can flip this seat, I promise to continue being a strong and determined voice for our veterans and military families.
Thank you.
