Friend,

Today, on Veterans Day, I want to talk to you about how my late grandfather and his service – to his country and family – inspires me to this very day. I hope you'll give it a read and join me in honoring the men and women who have served in our military.

When the Jan. 6 insurrection on our Capitol happened, and I was watching our democracy and my friends be attacked in real time, I thought of all of our heroes who have stood up for our country and democracy and given everything they had to protect it. I wondered what Grandpa Finkenauer, who was wounded on the U.S.S Bunker Hill and walked around with shrapnel in his leg to the day he died, would have thought of this moment.

But I didn’t wonder what he would have done. I knew.

He would have stood strong, he would have never given up hope and he would have continued to believe in and fight for the country and democracy he loved and that gave him an incredible life.

That’s who our veterans are. That’s what makes our country great, and that’s why no matter how much the hate, lies and misinformation try to divide us, we must never give up. We must honor our veterans' courage and love for our country by standing up and doing all we can to save it, together.

We must also recommit ourselves to being there for our heroes and their families, both now and in the future, when it comes to dignity, respect and their health care.

They gave us their best – they deserve ours.

It's the memory of my grandfather and his service that inspires me to fight for our country and my community – no matter the cost.

Today, as our nation pays tribute to the millions of veterans who have protected and served for us, I hope you'll join me in honoring their service – and I hope you feel inspired by a veteran in your life who, perhaps like my grandfather did, moves you to step up and serve in your own way.

To our veterans, thank you for your service. I fought for you in Congress, and I promise that I will continue to fight for you in the U.S. Senate.

– Abby
