Dear friend,
My name is Kenny Kubinski, and I've been a member of FAMM for decades, corresponding via prison email. I'm very happy to say that after 26 years behind bars, I am now free and writing this from my own home!
I'm writing this Veterans Day because I am a proud veteran myself. After service, I suffered from severe PTSD, and I think that had a lot to do with my ending up in trouble, and then not getting any kind of treatment or even consideration of my PTSD in my sentencing.
Being free has been just how I always imagined it would be, only better. I’ve been spending most of my time focused on my family. In fact, my son and I are working together in a little excavating business. My youngest daughter, Ariel, lives far away but we stay pretty close in touch. My oldest daughter, Katie, is getting married in May. I missed so many things over the 26 years, and so this is going to be a pretty big deal for all of us.
Since I've been out, I still think about my friends in prison, especially those who are veterans. Some of them are really struggling, just like I did.
I know that FAMM is working hard on their Second Chances Agenda, and I think that second chances are exactly what veterans in prison need. They sacrificed so much for our country, and the system has just thrown them away. That's not right.
I hope that for this Veterans Day, you’ll join me and FAMM in fighting for justice, and think of the many veterans behind bars who deserve a second chance. Visit FAMM’s website to see how you can help: famm.org/secondchances
Sincerely,
Kenny Kubinski for FAMM
