I am proud to be a veteran.
I knew since the 5th grade that I wanted to join the Navy. After entering the Naval Academy at 18 years old, I served as a Sea King Helicopter pilot (the same class of helicopter the President flies in when he rides aboard Marine One!) for nearly 10 years.
Veterans Day is a time to remember and thank the men and women who have bravely served in our armed forces. In order to honor their service to our country, we must show up for veterans the way they have shown up for us.
I’m fighting to make sure veterans and their families have the support and resources they need -- benefits they have earned -- especially during the pandemic. I’m working to strengthen access to health care and education opportunities for veterans, and I’m advocating for key investments in New Jersey’s military facilities. As one of the co-founders of the Servicewomen and Women Veterans Caucus, I stand up for women veterans to ensure their needs are met.
And earlier this year, I was proud to see my legislation, which establishes a mental health treatment program that connects veterans with therapy dogs, signed into law.
Today, I want to thank our servicemen and women for their sacrifices and contributions to our country. As one of only a few women veterans in the House, I’m proud to be a voice for you in Washington.
Thank you for all you do,
Mikie
