Friend – as we observe Veterans Day today, I'd like to share with you why this day is so personal to me, and why I hope you'll join me in commemorating those who have served in our Armed Forces.

Service is something I learned from my dad, Herb. He dedicated his career to teaching in Michigan public schools, and he also fought in World War II as part of the Greatest Generation. That's where he met my mom, Madeleine, who had survived the Nazi occupation of France. My dad’s ancestors also served under George Washington in Valley Forge during the American Revolution. The fact that service runs in my blood is something I take great pride in, and it's what motivated me to join the Navy Reserve alongside some of the most patriotic men and women this country has ever seen.

But I know that while serving our country is an incredible honor, it can come with a heavy sacrifice: being away from family, serving in some of the most dangerous places on earth, and, for far too many, coping with the often invisible effects of that service. To those who answered the call to defend our nation, I want to thank you and have you hear this straight from me: I'm fighting for you in the U.S. Senate.

Right now, I'm pushing the Department of Defense to implement legislation I passed to help ensure more veterans who are enduring post-traumatic stress can get the health treatment and care they deserve. We must always have the backs of the men and women who served our country. It's the right thing to do, and it's what all our public leaders ought to do.

On days like today, we honor the patriotic men and women who served in uniform and commit to fighting for a better future for them and their families. To all our veterans, thank you for your service.

– Gary
