Yesterday, news broke that NPR has obtained audio recordings from internal NRA meetings held in the aftermath of the mass shooting at Columbine High School in 1999. The recordings show that, even back then, in the wake of tragedy, the NRA's only concern was its own image and finances.

The audio captures deliberations between the NRA and its consultants about whether to hold the gun group's annual meeting in Denver just days after Columbine. The conversation makes it clear that instead of thinking about the people directly impacted by the unthinkable tragedy at Columbine, they were worried about their reputation and their pocketbooks. They decided to hold the meeting and in justifying it they wrote the playbook they still use today in the face of senseless mass shootings: oppose every solution and spread fear to pad their own pockets.

These recordings offer more proof of what we have long known to be true: the NRA is not working to protect the safety and well-being of the American people, it is working to pad their pockets no matter the cost. Help us defeat the NRA once and for all.
