Tell Prime Minister Justin Trudeau: Close Canada's Logging Loopholes and
Save the Boreal Forest!

Canada's majestic boreal forest is a critical resource in the fight
against climate change. But the country's logging industry destroys more
than a million acres of the boreal every year — and the Canadian
government's accounting gimmicks and regulatory loopholes are letting them
get away with it.

Dear NRDC Activist,

The science is clear: Solving our climate crisis depends not just on
ending our reliance on fossil fuels, but on protecting the forests that
are critical to our future.

Canada's majestic boreal forest is especially indispensable to the climate
fight, storing twice as much carbon as the world's oil reserves. It's also
home to Indigenous communities and is a critical refuge for threatened
wildlife.

But widespread industrial logging is destroying more than a million acres
of the boreal every single year — much of this in never-before-logged
primary forests. These ancient forests then end up in Procter & Gamble's
Charmin brand of toilet paper — and many other tissue products found on
shelves are made in part from climate-critical forests like the boreal.

Why? Because Canada's government has regulatory loopholes that allow the
logging industry to continue clear-cutting irreplaceable forests with zero
consequences.

Prime Minister Trudeau has said that he wants Canada to be a global leader
in the fight against climate change. But to do that, the Canadian
government must close these dangerous loopholes!

[ [link removed] ]We're calling on Canadian Prime
Minister Justin Trudeau to close logging loopholes that threaten the vital
boreal forest and are undermining the global climate fight and Canada's
climate leadership. Will you join us?

Trudeau's government has committed to protecting 30 percent of lands in
Canada by 2030 and supporting Indigenous communities' efforts to protect,
restore, and steward their ancestral lands by making new investments in
Indigenous Protected and Conserved Areas (IPCAs).

But the government is undermining these vital conservation efforts by
continuing to use emissions accounting gimmicks and regulatory loopholes
to let the country's logging industry continue destroying the boreal with
no accountability for its carbon footprint.

For example, the government has selectively excluded certain forests from
its carbon footprint calculations in order to obscure the logging
industry's climate impact by more than 80 million tons of carbon dioxide
each year.

[ [link removed] ]This must end: Demand that Prime Minister Trudeau close logging
loopholes that are destroying the boreal forest and fulfill the country's
commitments to act on climate change!

We can no longer afford to have Canada bury its head in the sawdust.

The Canadian government must stay on track with its climate progress by
protecting the boreal. That starts with reforming these accounting
gimmicks and loopholes to accurately report the climate impacts of logging
and hold logging companies accountable for their destruction.

[ [link removed] ]Please
use your voice to help protect the vital boreal forest.

Thank you for standing with us in defense of the boreal — and the planet —
during this critical time.

Sincerely,

Jennifer Skene
