When We All Vote

Senator Schumer has set a goal of passing the Freedom to Vote Act before Thanksgiving. Email your senators now [[link removed]] to let them know how important it is that we pass this legislation and protect voting rights.

John,

There are 2 and a half weeks left until Congress goes on their next recess for Thanksgiving, and Senator Schumer has set a goal of passing the Freedom to Vote Act before then. Can you take 5 minutes right now to call or email your senators and urge them to protect voting rights and support the Freedom to Vote Act? With a limited amount of time until the holidays-- and a lot of competing priorities in the Senate -- your outreach to your elected officials is essential right now.

We say this work is important and urgent in our communications to you often -- that’s because passing the Freedom to Vote Act through the Senate before the 2022 midterm election is our single greatest chance at truly building a democracy that includes all of us. With state lawmakers introducing more than 500 voter suppression bills to make it harder to get registered and cast our ballots, passing federal voting rights legislation is the single most important thing we can do to protect access to the ballot box . The Freedom to Vote Act will:

Allow for same-day voter registration,
Establish automatic voter registration,
Protect and expand access to voting by mail,
Establish 15 days of early voting, including at least two weekends,
Restore voting rights to individuals who have been previously incarcerated,
Prevent partisan gerrymandering, and
Protect against voter intimidation.

If you’re wondering why we’re asking you to contact your senators about this bill after it was filibustered in the Senate previously, it’s because Senator Schumer, in a procedural move, changed his vote on the motion to consider the Freedom to Vote Act to a no, allowing the bill to be reconsidered in the Senate at a later time. We’re hoping that he’ll be able to bring the bill up again before Thanksgiving and that your calls and emails will persuade enough senators to keep the Freedom to Vote Act from being filibustered again.

Please take a few minutes to contact your senators today and throughout this week -- let them know how important it is that we pass this legislation before it’s too late. 2022 is right around the corner and we need to do all we can to strengthen and protect the freedom to vote for millions of Americans ahead of a big midterm election year.
