The reason I first ran for office was to fight for people like my Dad.

My Dad immigrated here with my Mom, to build a better life for me and my older brothers.

He sold hot dogs, drove a taxi, and worked on a factory line to provide for us.

I witnessed his hard work and struggles and knew I had to create change for families like mine.

But when I told him I was running for the State Senate, he didn’t understand.

You see, my Dad grew up in Perú where only the elite held elected office.

But when I was elected to the Nebraska Legislature, he was so proud.

Because he saw that everyday people had a chance.

He saw there was hope that working folks wouldn’t keep getting left behind.

And he said to me, “Now you’ve gotta do the work” -- and so I did. In the legislature, I fought to secure COVID relief funding and create safer working conditions for factory workers, like my dad. I’ve never stopped fighting for working families and it’s time to take the fight to Congress. But to stand a chance against Don Bacon’s $417,000 warchest, I’m trying to raise $10,000 today. Sadly, my Dad passed from COVID-19 in April 2020.

I was horrified when my Republican Congressman voted against critical COVID relief and support for families of COVID victims.

I knew I had to fight for families like mine by unseating him and making it to Congress.

But I don’t come from money -- and winning this race won’t be cheap.

He also taught me that there’s no shame in asking for help when you need it.
