Friends —

I have received many messages from constituents asking for my thoughts on
the proposed homeless shelter in Riverdale.

Let me be very clear: I fully support the construction of this shelter,
and I encourage every member of the Riverdale community to join me in
welcoming new residents.

The 6661 Broadway shelter will provide counseling, life skills training,
and services to assist residents in finding more permanent housing.

Additionally, the shelter will create a Community Advisory Board. This
board will include residents of the shelter, community members, local
elected officials, and businesses, so that all members of the community
can participate in ongoing discussions about the shelter’s success.

All of us will find ourselves in need of a helping hand at some point in
our lives. So when individuals in our community are in dire straits, it is
incumbent upon all of us to come together to offer our support.

For those of you who have opposed the shelter up to this point, I urge you
to remember that nothing good has ever come of “othering” groups of people
— whether it be because of the color of their skin, their socioeconomic
status, or their religion, gender, or sexuality.

The residents of 6661 Broadway deserve our compassion and support, and I
hope that you can find it in your heart to offer that to them.

All my best,

Alessandra Biaggi
