Oswego Village Board, police union reach agreement
OSWEGO, ILL. ? ?The Village Board at its Oct. 19 meeting reached a two-year collective bargaining deal with the Metropolitan Alliance of Police, which represents the Village?s patrol officers.
The agreement includes wage adjustments over two years that keep police compensation competitive with comparable Chicago-area communities, as well as an agreement to further discuss body-worn cameras prior to implementation.
?The willingness of both sides to come together quickly on this demonstrates the special relationship we have in Oswego with our police officers,? Village President Troy Parlier said. ?I want to thank all the hard-working police officers who serve our community, especially facing the unique challenges of the last year.?
The deal keeps all previous terms of the collective bargaining agreement in place, and provides for a 2.75 percent wage increase on May 1, 2022, and a 3 percent increase on May 1, 2023. The Village continues to see an increasing number of officers retire as they reach eligibility, at the same time facing challenges to hiring new officers into the profession. Maintaining competitive compensation and benefits helps the Village be able to recruit high-quality officers to serve the community in the future.
?We were pleased to reach agreement so quickly and to be able to focus on serving our community,? MAP Chapter President Shane Burgwald said.
The Village is currently reviewing the requirements by the State of Illinois to implement body-worn cameras for all police officers. The Village is committed to discussing this process with the police officers prior to implementation.
?This will be a big change for our officers, but we know we can navigate this requirement together,? Police Chief Jeff Burgner said. ?We take pride in maintaining a positive, open relationship with our members. They do great work in our community each and every day.?
