Access to an affordable higher education makes our state stronger. That’s why earlier this year, I announced a statewide goal for 60 percent of Michiganders to have a postsecondary degree or certificate by 2030. That’s why earlier this year, I announced a statewide goal for 60 percent of Michiganders to have a postsecondary degree or certificate by 2030.

Wayne State University just took a huge step in making that possible with the Heart of Detroit Tuition Pledge -- which would provide free tuition to Detroit high school graduates accepted to the university.

Strengthening the pathway to higher education is one of the biggest changes we can make now to build a better future for Michigan. That’s why I’m working to make college and apprenticeship programs more affordable.

Increasing access to higher education is a win-win for our students and Michigan’s economy.

Earning a college degree or learning a trade puts more money in the pockets of working Michigan families, and having a skilled and educated workforce puts Michigan on the map for businesses looking to expand.
