Friends -
We wanted to make sure you saw Ed’s note from yesterday about Daylight Saving Time and our efforts to make it permanent.
Put simply, passing the Sunshine Protection Act would help our physical and mental health, our economy, and our environment. We must stop sacrificing our sunshine.
Thanks in advance,
Team Markey
Friends -
Yesterday afternoon, the Sun set in Boston at 4:29 p.m.
Every November, the practice of “falling back” as we switch to Standard Time disrupts our lives and robs us of an hour of daylight, just as we start to need it the most.
Changing back and forth between Standard Time and Daylight Saving Time twice a year is a relic of the past. It’s time we make Daylight Saving permanent, and stop sacrificing our sunshine.
This is a policy proposal that is broadly popular, bi-partisan, and supported by scientific research. Studies have shown it’s good for our physical health, our mental health, public safety, our economy, and our planet.
We spend more time in the sunshine, and reduce emissions by using less electricity keeping our homes lit and warm during waking hours. Making Daylight Saving permanent is an all-around win, and in my view, a no-brainer.
That’s why earlier this year, my Senate colleagues and I introduced legislation, the Sunshine Protection Act, that would do exactly that — and why I’m asking for your support today.
Add your name to my petition if you agree — it’s time we make Daylight Saving permanent.
The truth is this would not be the first time we’ve made this kind of legislative change. In 2005, I wrote the bill that extended Daylight Saving Time from 6 months of the year to 8, and its passing helped the American people save hundreds of millions of dollars on energy bills and reduced oil consumption by millions of barrels.
The extra sunshine? Well that’s been a nice bonus, too.
Now let’s be perfectly clear: Changes like this on their own are not at the scale and magnitude we need to confront the climate crisis. That’s why we need a Green New Deal, and I need your help to continue that fight each and every day.
But with this issue fresh in mind as we fall back this week — if you’re ready to stop changing your clocks twice a year and are fed up with longer nights, higher energy costs, disrupted sleep, and less sunshine, I hope you’ll add your name to my petition today.
Thank you in advance for your support.
