Unless you were there, I don't think anyone can fully imagine what it must have felt like to be at Travis Scott's Astroworld festival in Houston on Friday

when everything went wrong . You can probably imagine what it was like just before – to be a kid in a crowd with other kids in a crowd, free for a little while, at a time when we've been so restricted for so long. But for joy to turn to terror so unexpectedly, so suddenly – that defies understanding for most of us. Investigations into last weekend's tragedy that left eight dead and many more injured are underway. Lawsuits are also rolling in, and among the defendants are performers Travis Scott and Drake, as well as the event's organizer, Live Nation. What can be done to prevent these situations in the future? It’s one topic we’re exploring on today’s show, with yours truly filling in for David Brown, and our own

I’ve left radio twice: after I became a mother,

and now . The first time, I continued reporting while I was pregnant, and it was difficult. Imagine getting out every day in the Texas heat while carrying a heavy pack and wearing high heels (although the heels were a personal choice). All that while juggling deadlines for morning and afternoon broadcasts. It was hard. But I had many blessings: I was a grown adult, with a college education and a stable life. I imagined how much harder it would be to carry a pregnancy as a teenager – possibly without any of the blessings I had. So it was fitting that my last series for my public radio station at the time was about teen-pregnancies. Today, I am sandwiched between two generations: I care for my children and for my widowed mother. We've been dealing with the ups and downs of her health
to the best of our abilities. I have seen her decline in some areas of her life. So my last series this time is on

preventing elder abuse . Reporting for you has been a true privilege. This job has taken me to all corners of the state. I've learned about what Texans' needs are and what their dreams are. Reporting about you (I interviewed so many of you!) has been an honor. Storytelling is a powerful and magical tool, and one that I have been able to use professionally in Texas for the last 16 years. So I leave the Texas Standard with a sense of accomplishment. I also leave full of love: love for my co-workers, for the trade in general and for radio in particular. And I leave with gratitude for your support – including the physical notes, emails and calls where you offered me feedback. Thank you for caring and thank you for listening. Until we meet again!
