Last winter a senior named Tommy froze to death in his wheelchair in Tacoma.

The night Tommy died, the “inclement weather” shelter wasn’t open because the weather wasn’t deemed inclement enough.

Stories like this are why I occupied empty buildings to get more housing and why I’m running for Congress. No one should die because they’re poor — not one more death.

I co-founded Tacoma Housing Now (THN) last winter, and our direct actions got 200 shelter beds added in Tacoma and got 43 homeless people hotel rooms for 10 days over Christmas and New Year’s.

THN is a coalition led by our homeless members. Every time the city would offer us something, our negotiator would take it to our homeless members and ask them, “This is what they’ve offered — do you want to accept it?” For example, when we were occupying a middle school that had been empty for 10 years, we’d say:

“OK, the city is telling us that there’s asbestos so we have to leave because it’s not safe. Do you want to leave?” And they said, “No, we’d rather have asbestos than freeze to death.”

No one should be faced with death on the streets or asbestos in a building, but that was their choice.
