A note from from Mayor Brian Turnbull...
** NORTHVILLIANS,
------------------------------------------------------------
The next topic in our Remembrances Series will center around Veterans Day activities through the years. In the following weeks we will look at past Santa Parades and Thanksgivings in town before we transition to the Holiday Season. But first, let’s review some of the events that are happening in just a few days’ time:
* 11/14 – Northville Car Show/Gathering (last of season), 8:30 AM – 10:00 AM, Wing/Main St.
* 11/19 – “Lights On Holiday Parade”, 6:30 PM – Downtown Northville
* 11/20-21 – Holiday Greens and Winter Market, 7 Mile & Center St., 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM
Also, some quick COVID updates:
* The US has reopened its border to vaccinated international travelers ending a 20-month travel ban. (CNN)
* A new antibody cocktail developed by Regeneron could reduce the risk of COVID-19 by 82%. (Newsweek)
* CDC recommends that children between the ages of 5 -11 years receive the Pfizer-BioTech pediatric COVID-19 Vaccine. (CDC)
Other news:
* As many of you witnessed, the U.S. House of Representatives approved a $1.2 trillion Infrastructure bill on Friday evening. One good news item for Michigan (one of many), the bill included $7.5 billion to help build electric vehicle charging stations across the U.S., greatly helping our Michigan automakers in their attempt to shift to selling more electric cars and trucks. (Detroit Free Press)
COVID-19 CONFIRMED CASES: Northville has had 312 cases*/8 fatalities, Township 2801/53, Michigan 1.3M/24K, Nation 47M/754, Global 250M/5.0M. (CDC.com) *Wayne County data
Now let's look at remembrances around Veterans Days through the years:
* Northville has always had a great sense of National Pride. The Military Banner Program, sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce, highlights our local heroes on 170 pole-mounted flags. These are month-long reminders for every Memorial Day (May) and Veterans Day (November) of all those in our civic area that have served & fought for the freedoms of this community, our State and our Country.
* The original Armistice Day (later called Veterans Day) was the actual day my mother was born. In fact, the Detroit Free Press front page was framed on our wall, with the headline “Truce Ends War” on the 11-month, 11th day, the 11th hour, and signed on the 11^th minute. (That was the beginning of Veterans Day, the day WWI ended – November 11, 1918.)
* In WWII, my father was a proud Marine (is there any other kind?) and my mother was a “Rosie the Riveter” at the Willow Run B24 Liberator plant in Ypsilanti, which was part of the “Arsenal of Democracy”. As we have noted previously, Northville’s contributions to the national war efforts were tremendous over the years.
* My brother, who served in Vietnam, ended up being the Dean of the Culver Military School in Culver, Indiana. A banner in his memory, with one for my father, is displayed in downtown along with benches in City Square thanking them for their service.
* We in the community are truly indebted to everyone at the VFW Post & American Legion for all they have done and continue to do for the Ville. Additionally, Northvillians truly owe all veterans a great debt of gratitude for their commitment and sacrifice to protect our freedoms.
I encourage you to thank a veteran today for defending the freedoms and ideals we have in this Community, State and Country. And let’s keep in mind our remarkable history, how this has brought us to where we are today, and what we all can do together to progress our community into the future.
Keep that Northville Faith!
Brian Turnbull
