John,

At 18 I had an abortion. I was one of the 0.3% of women who get pregnant while taking birth control pills. The decision to terminate the pregnancy was difficult, but made with a lot of love and I have no regrets.

I shared my experience with abortion on social media because it’s important that people understand how common the decision to end pregnancy is and how varied the circumstances can be. While I understood that not everybody is on board with the idea that medical decisions about our bodies are ours to make, I was still taken back by some comments I received, considering it’s 2021:

“If you kept your legs closed, it wouldn’t have happened to you.”

“Murderer. But clearly, that dead kid is better off.”

“And if you weren’t giving out everywhere, I guess that unwanted pregnancy thing would be a little less possible.”

“You killed a human being. That’s not healthcare.”

Many see the recent SCOTUS decision and the Texas law as an attack on women when in fact, it’s an attack on poor people. Women and people with means will always have access to safe abortion. It’s people who can’t afford to fly to another state or country, miss work, or pay out of pocket for treatment who will be forced against their will to continue their pregnancy or risk their health by turning to back alley abortion means.

No matter how uncomfortable, I will always share my personal experiences and fight for people who can’t buy their way around the law. I will continue to fight against oppressive laws that don’t deliver justice.

Help our campaign succeed. With just $10 today, you can help us fight for reproductive justice and for the right of all people to safe, affordable, and legal abortion.
