We just sent an open letter to Congress with this warning:
“Our democracy faces an existential threat — the very real possibility that the outcome of an election could be ignored and the will of the people overturned by hyperpartisan actors.”
Public Citizen — along with MoveOn and Protect Democracy — led the way on this letter, which is signed by over 50 other allies including Common Cause, Greenpeace, Indivisible, League of Women Voters, People For the American Way, SEIU, Sierra Club, Social Security Works, and Union of Concerned Scientists.
Congress must pass the Freedom to Vote Act and its essential provisions to combat election subversion.
The Freedom to Vote Act would (among other protections):
- Safeguard the integrity of federal elections by requiring paper ballots.
- Protect voters from being intimidated at the polls.
- Protect election workers and election infrastructure against threats or violence.
- Combat partisan takeovers of elections by protecting local officials from unwarranted removal.
Add your name now to join us in urging Congress to pass the Freedom to Vote Act.
Thanks for taking action.
For democracy,
- Robert Weissman, President of Public Citizen
