Friend, Philadelphia has more children in need of foster care than any other city of comparable size – a reported 6,000 children need foster care at any given time. Yet several of the organizations who work to place children in foster homes in Philadelphia refuse to work with LGBTQ parents, citing religious reasons. And recent attempts by the Philadelphia government to prevent this anti-LGBTQ discrimination have gotten the city sued by religious right organizations. This epic battle between Philadelphia and the religious right over LGBTQ parents in the foster system is the subject of “Fostering Hate: Part I,” the latest episode of our Sounds Like Hate podcast (out now!). We traveled to Philadelphia to meet some of the parents and children affected by these discriminatory policies; their personal stories are both inspiring and heartbreaking. We also spoke to some of the legal experts tracking the ongoing litigation that will determine the future of queer parents in Philly’s foster system. Sounds Like Hate is a podcast from the SPLC that tells the stories of people and communities grappling with hate and searching for solutions. “Fostering Hate” is part of the podcast’s third season.
