Dear Friends,

Ohio Democrats saw some major wins in last week’s elections, and I hope that you will join me in congratulating some of the candidates that we supported on their much-deserved victories.

In Cleveland, Justin Bibb was elected Mayor, Stephanie Howse and Rebecca Maurer were elected to the Cleveland City Council. Michael Dylan Brennan was re-elected as Mayor of University Heights. Kahlil Seren was elected Mayor of Cleveland Heights and Shenise Turner-Sloss and Darryl Fairchild were elected as City Commissioners in Dayton.

With your help, Nina Turner for US supported these candidates through donations, organizing on the ground, and partnering with great allies like Our Revolution Ohio to help build a bench of champions who will fight for a bold agenda that lifts working families.

Cincinnati also elected its first mayor of Asian descent, Aftab Pureval and Michelle Wu’s historic victory as Boston’s first elected female mayor and mayor of color is another incredible win for our progressive movement.

Donate now to keep our movement growing.

In the meantime, there is still much work to do to protect progressives running for office.

India Walton, Democratic nominee for Mayor of Buffalo, NY, was defeated by the incumbent Byron Brown using a write-in campaign, funded by corporate interests to circumvent his loss in the primary. This is a troubling precedent that hurts our Democracy. It is also a stark reminder that progressives often take punches from corporate Democrats who are committed to maintaining the status quo. India was an extraordinary candidate and deserved support as the official Democratic nominee. We must remain vigilant with our time, talent and treasure to build our movement and push back on the disgraceful tactics used to hurt progressive candidates.

Foreshadowing of 2022

Last week’s results gave some indication of what we can expect in the midterms and how to change course. Republicans swept three statewide offices in Virginia, taking the Attorneys General seat, the Lt. Governor seat and elected its first Republican Governor since 2009.

In a race too close to call on election night, Governor Phil Murphy became the first Democrat to win re-election in New Jersey in 44 years, defeating a Republican challenger in a race no one expected to be that close.

With these volatile results, we know that delivering for the people is how we win in 2022.

More than ever we must pass the not just popular, but necessary legislation that will give voters something they can feel like, paid family leave, permanent child tax credits, expanding Medicare to cover vision, hearing and dental, student debt cancellation and more. We must protect the vote by passing the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act and to do it, we must end the filibuster now.

As we work towards the 2022 midterm elections, we will carry on our righteous fight for justice and continue doing what progressives have always done to push our mission forward -- organize, organize, organize.

Together, we will amplify our collective voice and use the power of the people to demand change. I want you to join us in mobilizing like-minded people across the country by lifting up our movement with a donation of $20.22 today >>
